According to Detay Newspaper, Turkish products are being sold in the south at lower prices than in the north. The sale of Turkish electronic products and textiles at prices cheaper than they are available in the north is causing serious competition for distributors in the north.
According to the Turkish Milliyet newspaper (18.02.16) “Google has ‘recognized’ the TRNC.” Apparently this is shown on the mobile map so I had a check on the desktop map to see if this was true. The image below is what I produced by searching for TRNC Cyprus and from the look of it it seems to be true. Well, to tell the truth the label really refers to the TRNC embassy in the north but it looks convincing.
At last the weather in North Cyprus is markedly better than in the UK. In the next few days temperatures during the day are going to rise as high as 26ºC in some areas. Overnight the drop in temperature will not be too great, perhaps as low as 15ºC but certainly still t-shirt weather in the evening. It’s not all good news however as there are a few showers expected over the next 7 days
A Turkish Cypriot property seminar held at the Turkish Cypriot Community Association (TCCA) building on 24th Jan 2016 revealed fears that claims for property would not favour Turkish Cypriots. As a starting point the seminar introduced the story of Esat Mustafa who lodged his case at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) after South Cyprus courts failed to secure him restitution and compensation for the loss of his home in Vroisha – the village of his birth located in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. His complaint was that the South’s Land Registry made the job of claimants very difficult in terms of verifying their ownership of properties in the South.
According to the south’s Cyprus Mail, research by the University of Cyprus Centre for Field Studies (UCYCFS) has discovered that there is still considerable bias towards Turkish Cypriots in education. In a survey carried out last month which questioned 501 Greek Cypriots over 18, it was discovered that 30% of Greek Cypriots did not want Cyprus school history books changed and 54% did not feel positive about the creation of mixed Greek and Turkish Cypriot schools.
When the south’s President Nicos Anastasiades addressed his parliament on Thursday he said the north wants to discuss the issue of territorial adjustments last for fear that leaks could derail the process. He did not say how this derailment was possible when the negotiations are supposed to create a document to be presented to both side’s electorate to vote in a referendum. It is what is in this document that will either result in the success or failure of the process, not rumours about the to and fro of negotiations.
