According to Cyprus Mail (6.7.2019) there have been two incidents of individuals ‘betraying the Republic of Cyprus’. One incident was as a result of an article published by one of Cyprus Mail’s own reporters.
According the the Greek Tovima news website (3.7.2019), Turkey has secretly transported 42 German Leopard-2A4 supertanks to Değirmenlik in North Cyprus. Well that’s a lie to start with, as you’re reading about it here then the tank transfer must not be secret. The website alleges that the tanks and their ammunition were transported from the Turkish city of Edirne by cargo ship.
The North Cyprus newspaper Halkın Sesi (03.07.19) reports that Arda Mevlutoglu, expert on defence policies, claims that Israel could have deliberately caused the S-200 missile to target North Cyprus. He was careful to imply that this could have been in order to avoid it targeting one of its planes.
According to Reuters (1.7.2019) a suspected Russian S-200 missile landed north of Lefkosa in North Cyprus early this morning. Currently there are no reports of casualties.
There is lots of news today but unfortunately you won’t find it in Cyprus Today. The front page says it all – moaning expats, fake news about Varosha, mosquitoes in the Summer and housecleaning. What more do you expect for £1.50, a nice cool pint of Efes?
I guess it is no surprise to learn that prices in North Cyprus have risen over the last year, particularly for food and non-alcoholic beverages, furniture and housing, water, electricity and gas. You just have to go shopping to discover that. North Cyprus Inflation is currently around 30% per year. What is interesting to ex-pats is how their buying power has actually improved during that period.
South Cyprus has strongly protested to the UN the violations of its national airspace, the infringements of international air traffic regulations in Cyprus’s flight information region in an attempt to close Ercan Airport in the North.
North Cyprus Prime Minister, Ersin Tatar, is quoted as saying that Varosha (Maras) is intended to become the Las Vegas of the Mediterranean returning to it’s old days when it was a popular destination for celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot.
As part of the battle between Turkey and Europe/USA, North Cyprus has become a hostage that Turkey threatens to use as a response to threatened sanctions. If Turkey annexes North Cyprus would it become more like Turkey? In other words, would North Cyprus become just be another Turkish region, called Kibris perhaps?
