‘STOP PCR PREJUDICE IN SOUTH’ – THE “discrimination” against people with Covid test results and vaccination cards issued in the TRNC must stop, a Turkish Cypriot organisation has demanded. The call was made by the “Direct Flights to North Cyprus” (DFNCyprus) group following numerous reports in recent days of UK and EU-bound passengers being told at Larnaca and Paphos airports that their negative PCR test results from the TRNC’s Health Ministry are not valid for flying — even though the same tests are acceptable when crossing from North to South. The passengers affected have been told they must undergo another test at the airport at their own expense.

TRNC hit by power cuts – THE government has agreed to buy 15,000 tonnes of extra fuel oil to help cope with high demand for electricity. The move was announced after North Cyprus suffered intermittent power cuts throughout the week due to “production problems” at the Teknecik power plant.

Güngör residents protest opening of stone quarry –  THE residents of Güngör held a protest on Thursday claiming that ministers granted a five-year operating permit to a stone quarry in the region that has been out of action for years. They gathered outside the Agriculture and Natural Resources Ministry in Lefkoşa holding placards against new activity in the quarry, which they said is only 350 metres from the edge of Güngör and that when it was operational in the past it caused “great damage to both the village and the people”.

Govt offers booster jabs to over 65s, chronically ill – PEOPLE over 65 and those with chronic health problems or in “risk” groups can now receive a third Covid jab, Health Minister Ünal Üstel announced this week. “While we continue to rapidly vaccinate people who have yet to be vaccinated, administering third dose vaccines to healthcare workers who were vaccinated six months ago has been completed,” Mr Üstel said.

THE REST

“Protective nasal spray” on sale at pharmacies – A NEW nasal spray whose producers claim can help prevent the transmission of the coronavirus has gone on sale at chemists in the TRNC. The “protective nasal spray”, sold under the brand name Olirin, has been launched by Near East University (NEU) in partnership with local pharmaceutical company İkas Pharma. “Olirin, which can be administered through the nose and mouth, on the one hand prevents SARS-CoV-2 from binding to the cells in the upper respiratory tract, and on the other hand, it kills viruses with its antiviral effect and provides dual protection,” an NEU statement said. “Olirin is also effective against viruses other than SARS-CoV-2.
