world press freedom

Today is World Press Freedom Day:

Having lived in north Cyprus for several years and having seen the press there capitulate under threats of Libel writs by Akfinans Bank Limited, citing Bank Law 39/2001 to justify this action, it is encouraging to see that the majority of the world’s press still campaign for their right to continue to enjoy their freedom to report facts free of fear from repressive Governments.

Of course there are still too many places in the world where freedom of speech and freedom of the written word
is prohibited.

It is difficult to believe that in the 21st century people are still being force fed propaganda and are having the truth withheld from them.

So for those of us who do enjoy freedom of information, let us spare a thought for those who have this basic Human Right denied them.
