ACTION URGED TO END WATER WOES – THOUSANDS of metres of pipes will need to be laid so that every part of the TRNC can receive fresh water from Turkey, officials have urged — almost four years after a pioneering undersea pipeline was completed.

A number of villages, particularly those on higher ground in the Girne region, are still experiencing supply problems due to leaks and low pressure despite the Geçitköy reservoir, which receives the water from Turkey, operating at full capacity. South authorities hand over murder suspect – A MAN accused of killing Turkish Cypriot businessman Gökhan Naim in Lefkoşa in March before fleeing to South Cyprus was yesterday handed over to the TRNC authorities.

Azmad Ali, one of the main suspects in the murder case, was remanded in custody for three days following an appearance at Lefkoşa District Court.

Leaders signal ‘readiness’ for a ‘tripartite meeting’ – PRESIDENT Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades are set to meet with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for the first time in more than two years, it was announced yesterday.

The two leaders signalled their “readiness” to hold a “tripartite meeting” with Mr Guterres after the UN’s General Assembly, which takes place next month, “in order to plan the way forward”.

Drilling off the Karpaz coast starts – A TURKISH drillship located off the Karpaz peninsula has commenced operations to find hydrocarbons under the Mediterranean Sea, Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Dönmez said on Tuesday.

Mr Dönmez was speaking from the deck of the Yavuz vessel, where he was joined by TRNC Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, Economy and Energy Minister Hasan Taçoy, and broadcast media who were given a tour of the ship.

Girne Land Registry staff in custody, charged with fraud – THREE members of staff in the Girne Land Registry office have been charged with fraud and counterfeiting documents in a suspected property scam that initially saw the arrest of two men, one of whom is head of the Girne branch of UBP, the majority partner of the coalition government.

Head of the UBP Girne branch and prominent businessman Mehmet Eminoğlu and Serdar Özbekoğlu, a certifying officer, were last week arrested earlier for allegedly forging a signature regarding the transfer of title deeds for two apartments in the Girne area and then passing the documents to the Land Registry office.
