[OPINION] TRNC Havadis newspaper prints lies about Pauline Read

I received this translation of an article that appeared in Havadis newspaper dated 25th November 2010, page 23. Letter is to “Garga” alias Harun Denizkan, signed by “Erkan Uygun”. There is no such name on either the electorate or in the telephone directory.

“It states that you had a so called protest on the anniversary of TRNC day with the help of friends to bypass the laws. The leader of the protest was Pauline Read who has two villas with swimming pools in south Cyprus. She is also charged by the police for insulting the judge publicly.

There are thousands of happy foreigners who bought in the TRNC but Pauline Read is interested only in propaganda against TRNC. The bank have to protect their assets. These people were offered every chance to reach an amicable settlement and indeed the court case was postponed by 54 times against promises by these people to settle but they never kept their promises. Their attitude is more like trade unions. Instead of trying to solve problems they are interested in strikes and if the wall is demolished and they get injured they look for help from the people instead of asking themselves where they made a mistake. Will it not be wiser to sit up and look where they made a mistake instead of trying to buy houses on the cheap and losing their money to developers?”

I will take this letter point by point:

  1. Ismet Üstüner kindly lead the Vigil because the law prohibited me from doing so. My only part was as an observer and aiding in the publicity.
  2. That I own two villas with swimming pools in south Cyprus is an out and out lie and I challenge the cowardly writer of this letter to show me where the two villas are. I know at my age the memory fades, but I would think I would remember that. I did own a Villa in the south without a pool from 1987 to 1998 which I sold and moved back to the UK.
  3. I have not received a Summons for my allegedly insulting a Judge; in fact I do not know what I am to be charged with until I do receive a Summons. It is fairly common knowledge that four police personnel came to my house and took my laptop on the 14th October 2010 and I now find that despite a promise it would be returned to me when the evidence they needed was taken from it, my written application and phone calls, I have been told they will not return it to me and are keeping it as evidence. I totally respect the Judiciary of the TRNC.
  4. It is obvious from the detailed knowledge displayed by the writer of this letter that he was actively involved in getting this charge levied against me. I am not a ‘spy’; I am not a threat to National Security, I am not a drug dealer. I am a 65 year old pensioner who poses no threat to anyone.
  5. It is ridiculous to suggest that my only interest is in propaganda against the TRNC, I love the TRNC. it makes no sense, if I wanted to indulge in propaganda against the TRNC, surely I would be sitting by the pool in one of my NONE EXISTENT VILLAS in the south of Cyprus where I could throw as many rocks as I please without fear. What depths will Akfinans Bank plumb to get rid of me. You have to ask why? Am I getting too close to the truth?
  6. The fact that the writer relates to the case being postponed 54 times against promises made, I assume the writer alleges this against other members of Kulaksiz 5 as this is something I cannot comment on since I was not a part of that legal action, having decided to pursue a different route. I find this allegation to be so unlikely as to be laughable. I doubt there have been 54 hearings.
  7. Here we go again, the old buying the houses on the cheap chestnut. They were not cheap. They were marketed at the going rate at that time in the TRNC. Using this argument sort of backfires a little when you consider Akfinans Bank Limited, will, if they succeed, have picked up 13 houses and a lot of land for a capital outlay of 104,000TL. Now that is what I call cheap.
