Kazan Fundraiser Nets £1000 For Embargoed!

Nearly one hundred people attended Embargoed!’s fundraising dinner on Sunday 6 March 2011, helping to raise £1,000 for the group.  Guests at the recently refurbished Kazan restaurant in Victoria were spoilt with tantalising canapés followed by a sumptuous buffet of Ottoman influenced cuisine.

Dignitaries included Baroness Ludford the Liberal Democrats MEP for London, the TRNC London Representative Kemal Koprulu, Counsellor from the Turkish Embassy Uygar Sertel, Linda Roy, the Communication Workers Union National Equal Opportunities Officer, BBC News Reporter Alex Ritson, Conservative Councillor for Winchmore Ertan Hurer, Servet Hassan, the Chair of the Association of Turkish Women in Britain and Leon Menzies Racionzer from Tolerance International UK.

The group also received apologies from both Billy Hayes, the General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union and Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece, who were unable to attend due to illness.  Baroness Hussein-Ece issued a statement in which she congratulated Embargoed! for bringing a professional focus to the campaign ensuring that Turkish Cypriots achieve equality and social justice in Cyprus.  The evening’s key note speech was delivered by Baroness Ludford who stressed the importance of people not accepting and learning to tolerate the present situation. Referring to the EU she said they needed to become a main player in  the  Cyprus  situation,  and  not  simply  a  spectator .  She called for political courage and imagination to be applied to end the immobility on the Cyprus issue.

Fevzi Hussein, Embargoed! Chair, said ‘the fundraiser’s dynamic atmosphere served as an important reminder that Embargoed’s mandate resonates strongly with a vibrant and varied range of people.  Embargoed! is grateful to all its supporters; with their help and financial generosity we will continue to punch well above our weight to highlight the injustice faced by Turkish Cypriots both here and in  North Cyprus’.

The public and business community are strongly encouraged to offer its support to help Embargoed! For details how to help please go to their website www.embargoed.org/donations.php
