Modern Poetry | The New Jerusalem

Modern PoetryModern Poetry – The New Jerusalem

I penned this for a person fighting the massive proliferation of solar farm applications in Norfolk (and elsewhere, indeed). How’s this grab you? She loves it – it’ll probably get performed for YouTube!!

The New Jerusalem
with apologies to John Milton and William Blake

And did our feet in ancient time
Walk once in England’s heathlands green?
And were the birds and farmer prime
On England’s pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Speculator Green
Stalk forth upon our sainted fields?
And new Jerusalem’s sorry scene
Bought with tax and dodgy deals?

Away my mills of spinning blade!
And my parks of power claimed!
Go, ye planners! O clouds, unfold!
Desist, the council man with gold!

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
To fight this false Jerusalem
