North Cyprus Property | Victim Alternatives – Negotiation or Litigation

It is a fact that many groups are out there trying to obtain that elusive lady ‘justice’ for victims of  property scams in Cyprus, both north and south. Some do it for nothing, some charge. It really is up to the victim to chose which option suits them. Some victims have chosen the legal route and this, if they use the right advocate and have money and time, suits their need and is their choice. No sensible person with experience of the system expects the legal system in north Cyprus to work quickly. Indeed once you are embroiled in legal action, it can be very lengthy no matter where you are in the world.

Negotiation v Litigation. I think negotiation is always going to be quicker than litigation but good faith only on one side causes the need for litigation. Even then, most cases end in a settlement. Sometimes it may be more cost effective to ‘bite the bullet’ and pay a little extra to achieve a negotiated settlement and one has to weigh up the costs of doing this against the legal costs. Indeed it may well be economically beneficial to pay the ‘extra’ the builder/landowner/developer demands than pay the legal costs of a court case and it will certainly save you in stress, time, health and well being. However, it would be prudent to have a legally trained professional involved in your negotiation. Again, back to personal choice, no one solution suits all.

It is well known, simply because of the average age of the victims who buy retirement homes in the sun, many will not live to see justice. The only thing they did wrong was buy a property in the wrong place, at the wrong time, from the wrong person. This is the tragedy and whenever and wherever it happens, it is wrong.
