Cyprus Problem | Call My Bluff | Ankara Protocol

Turkey, at the moment, is not particularly interested in joining the EU and the Franco-German anti-Turkish membership alliance is definitely not interested in them joining either. A new Cyprus President who says he wants a settlement needs to be tested early, in my opinion, and suggestions of a unilateral implementation of the Ankara Protocol might just be the ticket.

Put simply, the Ankara Protocol is a sticking point in Turkey’s EU membership because Turkey is refusing to open its ports and seaports for goods from south Cyprus. If Turkey were to indicate it was willing to do this, and wait for the new President’s, and the EU’s, response then it would act as a litmus to test if anything had changed.

With talks of a gas pipeline to Turkey from Israel this looks as if it could be an issue anyway.
