Larnaca airport closes for Christmas

Although the problem was not as serious as those experienced in the UK, two flights were cancelled, one flight was diverted to Beirut  and the rest were diverted to Paphos airport. The problem was caused by a problem with the runway lights which Hermes spokesman, Adamos Aspris, said had been fixed overnight.

Passengers from the UK who had struggled through icy conditions to reach airports where flights were being cancelled or severely delayed were not happy with this unexpected closure of Larnaca airport. Some thought they had finally made it to Cyprus in time for Christmas only to find themselves in Beirut.

The spokesman for Hermes who operate the airport, which cost €656.3m to update only a few months ago, explained that the runway lights were not part of this update.
