Christmas Shopping in the UK - Bah Humbug!

Christmas Shopping in the UK - Bah Humbug!I have now completed all my Christmas Shopping, in other words what I don’t have now, we go without! Oh, how shopping has changed in the UK!

I have had enough of hearing in every shop I go into, even for a small item, “would you like a bag?” and then the punch line “5p please”. I answer no thank you, mainly because I don’t believe all those millions of 5ps do actually go to charity and because I have always recycled carrier bags anyway. So when shopping I am always armed with half a dozen bags for life. It is obvious there are many people who forget their sturdy bags for life and they can be seen with an arm full of goodies, some of which hit the floor before they reach their car. Interestingly enough it is the people in their “20’s” who don’t bat an eyelid at the request for 5p, they just go ahead and pay.

I must have a fortune in Cyprus of folded up carrier bags.

Another nightmare is these do-it-yourself checkouts. They are great if you are not buying alcohol. If you are, then you have to wait for the assistant anyway. I have also spent a long time explaining to elderly folk who stand in front of them totally bemused as to what they have to do. There is never an assistant handy and I just feel sorry for them.

Today was different. I purchased an extra box of crackers for the children. Surprisingly, the till told me I had to wait for authorisation. I waited and waited with a growing queue behind me. Eventually an assistant came and I asked why has this happened, there is no alcohol in kids crackers. “No, they have small parts” was the reply?! I think Health and Safety has gone too far with this one.

I have come to the conclusion that these check outs are rarely faster.

Of course today is “Men’s Shopping Day” and I had to laugh at so many men carrying bunches of Christmas flowers and it was so windy all the heads were getting battered.

Happy Christmas everyone and be very careful with your Christmas crackers.

Probably an urban myth, but once I heard that it was because they contained explosive materials (what make crackers “crack”!) – in this day and age, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were true!
