Cyprus Today | 14/8/2013Boy injured in jetty collapse – an illegally constructed jetty at a Karsiyaka beach collapsed and seriously injured a 11-year-old boy. The article contains a series of responses from individuals saying that it wasn’t their fault, including the beach bar manager who said that he’d been defrauded by an unnamed ‘Turkish building firm’ who he’d paid 10,000TL to for the construction of the jetty. It seems the builder ‘had run off to Turkey’. Editor: if it had been a tourist the story would be spreading round the world now. Headlines would be something like ‘Illegal Construction Seriously Injures Child in Northern Cyprus.’

Fair promises night of entertainment – the Lapta annual fair runs from 30th Aug-8th Sept 2013. There will be live entertainment and a traditional fair.

Talat: I am victim of blackmail plot – apparently former president Talat went to the police concerning a tape recording of an overheard 2009 conversation, just before the elections, and was told that no laws had been broken. The recording had been released to the news media last month. The conversation was about the poor state of TRNC because of the misuse by CTP, his party, of Turkey’s aid money. It was suggested that austerity measures would provoke a strike but that this would save money, 80mTL for a month long strike. Talat finished the conversation by saying ‘where did we go wrong?’ CTP lost the election.
