How many times can you write on the same subject without loosing interest? Of course I am referring to the TRNC’s constant attempts to put a sticking plaster on a gaping wound, and for the great part, a self inflicted wound.
We know of the Oram’s sad and sorry saga which was completely mismanaged with catastrophic results. The ECHR came to the rescue by recognising the IPC and encouraging its use.
Externally we have Embargoed! and ATCA working their socks off to get recognition and sympathy for our cause highlighting the obvious violations of the Human Rights of the ordinary Turkish Cypriot men and women who are the backbone of the TRNC.
Unfortunately, the treatment of the ex-patriots who have chosen to make the TRNC their home is negating all the good work of our friends abroad. How can a country, which allows Banks to mortgage properties belonging to someone other than the borrower, be taken seriously? How can a legal system that allows a Builder to use the police and the court system as his own personal bully boys be taken seriously?
You all know I am referring to Kulaksiz 5 and Geoff and Mary Day. These are just two examples, and would that they were the only two, sadly it is not so. I keep reminding you of the 1400 other ex-pats waiting for the hammer (forgive the pun) to fall, when their homes could be auctioned due to the incorrect lending policies of some Banks. We have all heard stories about unauthorised visits from police officers instigated by their Turkish/Turkish Cypriot friends on innocent people whose only crime is to have offended in some way these friends of the police officer. This type of intimidation has to stop if the TRNC is to be taken seriously. Not only is this bad for the image of the TRNC, but it brings all the honest, hardworking police officers into disrepute.
I have been told that some Turkish Cypriots would like the British to leave. One guy in particular is of the opinion that we will be replaced by Americans and Israelis. Really, well a lot of my American family and friends have no idea where Cyprus is, no knowledge whatsoever of the division and no plans to visit here any time soon. I cannot think they are alone in this. The Israelis, they might like to make money here, but live, I really cannot see that happening. The Russians have indeed been buying. Do you think they will be the pushover the Brits have been? A Russian lady was faced with an irate Turkish Cypriot workman, who, after doing a very mediocre job for her, demanded payment. She said she wasn’t paying. His reaction, he would burn her house down. Her reaction was, if you do, I will burn your house down with you and your family in it. I will then burn your parent’s house down with them in it and after that I will burn your grandparent’s house. A little bit more persuasive than the Brits who usually rush to the HBPG or to a lawyer who usually can do nothing to help but who are happy to take their money.
We know that the propaganda machine in the South is slick and well funded, but is that any reason for the TRNC to hand them the stick with which to beat us, time after time? I say us as this is my home, it is not where I was born which makes it even more special – it is where I choose to be and where I want to be.
Today is a very special day Peace and Freedom Day – good for all citizens and guests alike. Perhaps we pensioners can enjoy peace and freedom too, peace of mind and freedom from the worry that any day we could be served with eviction notices.
