Havadis prints Pauline Read’s reply to ‘Erkan Uygun’s’ lies

This is the version that was translated by Ismet and appeared on the letters page today in Havadis. It was printed in its entirety.

“For the second time I have been the victim of character assassination by the press without the right of reply; the hallmark of good journalism?

The first occasion was when Kibris Gazetesi printed an article faxed in to them by Akan Kursat which basically accused me of being a delusional woman who expected to keep my villa at Kulaksiz 5 having already received £120,000 court award in my Breach of Contract action. It was totally untrue, I had not then, and still have not received a penny in compensation, the lies being made more sinister by the fact that at a meeting with Akan Kursat on the 23rd July 2010, I told him I had not received this money. Kibris Gazetesi printed an apology and the truth.

Now I find that Havadis have printed a letter in their ‘GARGA’ alias Harun Denizkan column from someone signing himself ‘Erkan Uygun’. Careful checking of the electoral roll and telephone directory reveals no such person. It would seem that I am now to be maligned by someone so cowardly he will not reveal his true identity. The letter was printed on the 25th November 2010 page 23. The letter states that I was the leader of the Vigil held on the 14th November, this is untrue. Ismet Ustuner led the Vigil because the law here prohibited me from doing so. There are many here that disagree with the interpretation of that law, but I as a foreigner, respected the decision and only observed the Vigil. The letter goes on to say that I own two villas with pools in South Cyprus, this is untrue also. I rather wish I did.

To say that I am only interested in propaganda against the TRNC is also a lie, designed to make me unpopular with Turkish Cypriots who I know are appalled at what is happening to me and Kulaksiz 5 at the hands of Akan Kursat and Akfinans Bank Limited. Let me state for the record, I love the TRNC, I love the Turkish Cypriot people and that is why I chose this country as my home. I did own a villa in South Cyprus from 1987 to 1998 which I sold and moved back to the UK. The reason I sold was that I did not like the changes in the South brought about by the influx of people from former communist countries, I no longer felt safe I have to say that with these attacks and advice given by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office after the attack on my partner, I am beginning to feel unsafe here.

It is true that my writing on North Cyprus Free Press has been seen as inappropriate when I was reporting on a criminal case against an ex patriot accused of theft who has made 66 court appearances. I am a blogger and not a professional journalist so if as alleged, I fell foul of the law on reporting, it was not intentional and not a sign of disrespect. I respect all Judges. I think this comment gives us a clue to the identity of the writer of the letter. Four police officers visited my home and confiscated my laptop on the 14th October 2010 and now the prosecution service refuse to return it to me. I have received no Summons so I really do not know what I am charged with. I am a 65 year old blogger, not a spy, not a threat to national security and certainly not dishonest. I do not know anything about the alleged 54 postponements of legal cases as I was not party to the action taken then by the Kulaksiz 5, I chose another legal route. I do feel however that all so called amicable arrangements suggested would have involved them paying off the mortgage and I really do not understand what part of ‘ we have no money’ and ‘we owe no money’, the writer of the letter fails to understand..

These villas were not cheap. All purchasers paid the full asking price at the time.If you want cheap – look no further than AKFINANS BANK LIMITED obtaining 13 houses and land for an outlay of 104,000 TL. Now that is cheap.”
