Popular Science News | Texting’s 20th Birthday

Popular Science News – it’s texting’s 20th Birthday this Christmas, although it was not until 5 years after Neil Papworth’s message that texting started to take off. The Short Message Service (SMS) was initially seen as a nice little earner for the telephone companies but then proved to be a pain as messages started to swamp the system.

It was TV shows like Big Brother that proved that using texts to finance a programme was a real possibility. On top of this were the premium rate texts and of course the multitude of scams that inevitably surfaced. It’s strange to think that my great-grandchildren (if I had any) would find it unbelievable to learn that when my grandchildren were born, there was no such thing as texting!
