In the past 500 years there have been over 200 tsunamis in the Mediterranean area including in Cyprus, an earthquake zones.  UNESCO considers that there is a high risk of fatalities and economic disaster in the southern Mediterranean because of the high population density along the coasts – 150 million people along 460,000 kilometres of coastline.

A workshop is to be held between 30th  May to 2nd June 2012, on the Italian island of Stromboli. The focus in on the detection of potential risks from tsunamis in the Mediterranean, how to alert the population and spread information about residents can protect themselves if a tsunami was imminent.

On Cyprus, particularly the north, civil defence drills focus on the more obvious emergencies and currently neglect dangers such as tsunamis.
