Girne Belediyesi Moves Street Dogs to Exposed 'Dog Shelter'

I have just discovered that street dogs have been removed from 2 main areas in Girne, next to the Round Tower and also at the top of the town, without consultation with KAR or any other animal welfare organisation.

So far, 15 dogs have been removed by Girne Belediyesi and taken to an out of the way site that is difficult to get to. The Belediyesi have put a sign on the site’s locked gates saying ‘Temporary Dog Shelter’. Despite being called a ‘Dog Shelter’ there is in fact no shelter for the dogs.

A Girne Buffet owner is very upset by this situation as he has been feeding, looking after and building kennels for several of these dogs. After he had been involved in discussions with Girne Belediyesi, they agreed that he could take the kennels and bedding to the unmanned, locked area. Owing to its the site’s exposure to the elements, wind and rain may still enter the kennels. These are dogs from different packs and, now forced to live in close proximity to each other, fighting has already began.

The directions to the site are – coming down to Girne, on the main Lefkosia – Girne road, past the St Hilarion turning and before the 1st big bend in the road there is a dirt track to the left going up the mountain – the ‘site’ is quite a long way up that track and is in fact a disused water depot.

There is a petition to save the Girne dogs at change.org

Update From KAR

‘On behalf of everyone at KAR, and more importantly the Kyrenia town dogs, THANK YOU everyone (individuals, groups and organisations) who have voiced their concerns, in whatever way, about the recent situation.

Whilst it is very early stages there has been ongoing intensive discussions/liaisons between KAR and Girne Belediyesi. As a result of this there has been some developments. The KAR Community Warden and colleague from Girne Belediyesi are going up to the “site” this morning. It has been agreed that some of the dogs can be returned to Girne town – today.

We will keep people updated as/when we can – we hope that you can all appreciate that we are trying our best and everything needs to be done in conjunction with the authorities.’

    UPDATE from KAR……

Update at 15.00 20/01/16 – following a meeting between KAR, a representative from the Girne Belediyesi, and Erbay (buffe owner) a decision was made about which/how many dogs were to be returned to Girne town centre. This decision was made following liaison and discussion between the above.
It was decided that 4 dogs would be returned to Girne (near the Round Tower) immediately.
There will be ongoing discussions, between the relevant persons/groups, regarding the other dogs being held at the temporary Girne dog “site” – but assurances have been made regarding their care and housing whilst they are being held there. This will be monitored.
The outcome of the dogs, and the discussions about their outcome, has to follow the correct procedure and process with the authorities.
KAR would like to thank everyone again for their support of these dogs.
