COVID CASES AT ‘TIPPING POINT’ – THE most populated parts of North Cyprus have reached a “tipping point” in the number of daily new Covid-19 cases, the first of new weekly reports have shown. A “risk analysis” map produced by the Health Ministry’s Communicable Diseases High Committee this week showed that the Girne, Lefkoşa and Gazimağusa districts are “red” based on the average number of daily new cases per 100,000 people. The report showed that during the period August 25-31, the average number of daily cases per 100,000 people was 54.6 in Lefkoşa, 43.7 in Girne and 34 in the Gazimağusa region.
Calls for drink driving clampdown after motorcyclist, 58, dies in accident on Tatlısu-Girne main road – CALLS have been made for a clampdown on drink driving after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on the Tatlısu-Girne main road shortly after midnight on Wednesday night. A statement from the police press office said that Bülent Güzelkeskin, 58, died when he was involved in a collision with a car driven by Esentepe resident Christopher Browning, 70, at the Küçükerenköy junction.
The statement said that Mr Browning, who was driving north from the Crystal Bay Marina junction, pulled out onto the Tatlısu-Girne main road and into the path of Tatlısu resident Güzelkeskin while “under the influence of 69mg of alcohol in his breath” and after “failing to reduce his speed sufficiently and give way”. Police said that Mr Güzelkeskin died at the scene from his injuries and that they arrested Mr Browning, who appeared before Gazimağusa District Court on Thursday.
Syria oil spill threat to Karpaz coast recedes – THE imminent threat to the TRNC’s Karpaz coast from an oil spill emanating from Syria appears to have receded due to a change in wind direction. Both sides of Cyprus and Turkey were put on high alert at the start of the week after satellite images showed a huge oil slick fanning out westwards from the Baniyas oil refinery on the Syrian coast towards the east coast of Cyprus.
