TRNC government keeps Anthony Davey imprisoned without charge

British ex-pat Anthony Davey aged 70 has been languishing in squalid conditions at Lefkoşa Central Prison since being involved in a road traffic accident that resulted in the deaths of Adem Dere aged 15 and Ail Turkez aged 16 on the 11th January 2011. It is alleged that the car driven by Mr. Davey struck the scooter being ridden by the two boys. It is also alleged that one of the boys was also hit by another car after being thrown from the scooter.

Mr. Davey alleged bail money has fluctuated from 10,000TL, to 210,000TL and now it is reported that the court require the deeds to three properties with an estimated value of £600,000. Mr Davey, who it is alleged has not yet been charged, is unable to meet these bail condition and so is languishing in a prison cell. Under TRNC law he can be imprisoned without charge for up to 90 days.

Mr Davey who is still grieving the death of his wife, suffers from chronic arthritis and needs anti inflammatory and pain killing medication. Quite obviously the conditions in a prison will only exacerbate this debilitating condition. I personally find it unbelievable that in the 21st century any country which bemoans the violation of its Human Rights through being Embargoed and having Direct Flight facilities withheld, should treat a fellow human being so badly and violate his Human Rights so blatantly. I pray Mr Davey remains strong enough to survive this inhumane treatment. I also pray that the TRNC President will intervene and order his release immediately. Compassion seems thin on the ground in the TRNC.

I will take this opportunity to extend my personal condolences, and that of all of us who write for and read North Cyprus Free Press, to the families of the deceased. Our hearts and thoughts are with you at this very sad time.

I beg of the legal system in the TRNC, charge Mr Davey and set him free on his own cognisance, you have his passport so he is no flight risk.

If you do not intend to charge him, then set him free.

If you wish to join the campaign to free Mr. Davey, go to Facebook and join “Free Anthony Davy”.

If you wish to make your feelings known go to Human Rights Watch go to www.hrw.org/contact/london

Whatever happens we cannot just sit back and watch Mr Davey languish, or even worse still, die in prison.
