Peaceful, Candlelit Vigil in Lefkoşa supported by Turkey’s TRNC Ambassador

Fire AngelI hope you have all purchased your candles in readiness for our Peaceful, Silent Candlelit Vigil on Monday 4th October, outside the Turkish Embassy in Lefkoşa between 5.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m.

I met with the Turkish Ambassador Mr Kaya Türkmen yesterday with other members of Kulaksiz 5 who had decided to join me at that meeting. Our reception was warm and welcoming and my initial nervousness at meeting such a high profile official was dissipated by the charisma of this charming gentleman.

Obviously I cannot reveal other matters discussed at this meeting but I am sure Mr Türkmen will have no objections to my revealing his support for our Vigil and the fact that he telephoned Mrs. Guerler, Chief of Police in Lefkoşa to advise her of this fact. I did hand to Mr. Ambassador the details of other property related problems sent in to me by more victims of builders and banks. To date there are, throughout Cyprus, potentially 104 000 victims of mortgage fraud both Cypriot and foreigners.

Today I have a meeting with Mrs Guerler, Chief of Police at Lefkoşa, and hope she will assist me in obtaining the necessary permit for our Vigil. TRNC is my adopted home, and I am so sorry to have to meet with such wonderful people under the current circumstances.  I, in common with so many of you, love the TRNC and the Turkish Cypriot people but cannot stand by and allow these injustices to be committed.

There will be a Protest in London on the same issue on the same day. It is outside the Turkish Embassy starting at 10.30 a.m. and finishing at 4.30 p.m.  The organisers, ABAG, wish to stress this Protest is for all victims of the TRNC property market and that their Protest, like our Vigil is a peaceful event.

A little bird tells me that İpek Özerim, of journalistic and P.R. fame, and some of her friends will be at the London Protest. The press pack will be there also. Let us hold up our end by having a good turn out from the TRNC media.

Obviously Pollymarples and Pauline Read will be there.
