Reflections on a Divided Island | Cyprus Problem

Reflections on a Divided Island | Cyprus Problem

So here we are in the 21st century knowing so much and yet having learned so little. We talk the talk, yet still we do not walk the walk. Living here in the north of Cyprus on the only truly divided island in the world, a few short days from 2013, very little seems to have changed in some people’s attitudes since that day in 1974 when Turkey came to the rescue of the Turkish Cypriots living on the island of ‘love’ in 1974. The island of ‘love’ where so much racial hatred seemed to abound, not a lot of love was being shown towards each other back in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s on the island of Cyprus and today the picture continues to look bleak from where I am sitting.

Obviously as a foreigner looking in from the outside, the true picture may be being obscured, but living amongst and talking with the Turkish Cypriot people, I see hope for the future fading, I see real misery as the economy falters and the young viewing their future with pessimism. Strangely enough, that is exactly the same picture I see in the south of the island too. Distant hopes of new found wealth from natural gas and oil seem too far off when today you wonder how to pay your bills and sustain a daily existence. The Utopia that was to come from membership of the EU has floundered in the south and like the rest of Europe, Cypriots are having to pull in their belts that have been on the last notch for too long. Their neighbours in the north are doing the self same thing. Could it be that more unites them than divides them? I do not know. What I do know is that keeping Embargoes on a people as small as northern Cyprus is not the way forward. to punish the ordinary men and women is not humane and is a violation of their Human Rights, to try to starve anyone into submission is barbaric and there are are more ways to starve a person than just by withholding food. It is the 21st century, have we learned nothing from the mistakes of the past?

There is much that is wrong in north Cyprus, this happens when a small section of the world is not allowed to join the world family. Isolation creates darkness of deed and action. Decent people try to avoid it but the greedy and the avaricious welcome it, evil flourishes in darkness. Once the doors of the world open up and invite north Cyprus back in, the light it brings with it will shine and there will be no dark corners for those who put self above the good of the majority to hide.

‘Melting Pot’ Lyrics

‘Take a pinch of white man
Wrap him up in black skin
Add a touch of blue blood
And a little bitty bit of a red Indian boy
Like a Curly Latin kinkies
Oh Lord, Lord, mixed with yellow Chinkees, yeah
You know you lump it all together
And you got a recipe for a get along scene
Oh what a beautiful dream
If it could only come true
You know, you know
What we need, what we need
is a great big melting pot
Big enough big enough big enough to take
The world and all it’s got
And keep it stirring for
A hundred years or more
And turn out coffee coloured people
by the score
Rabbis and the friars
Vishnus and the gurus
We got the Beatles or the Sun God
Well it really doesn’t matter
What religion you choose
And be thankful little Mrs. Graceful
You know that livin’ could be tasteful
We should all get together in a lovin machine
I think I’ll call up the Queen
It’ s only fair that she knows
You know, you know
What we need, what we need
is a great big melting pot
Big enough big enough big enough to take
The world and all its got
And keep it stirring for
A hundred years or more
And turn out coffee coloured people by the score’

This old and very popular ‘hit’ said it all. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
