Ferry runs from Lebanon to Famagusta

catamaranA ferry is now running between Lebanon and north Cyprus, contrary to international law. Tickets are $125 and despite complaints from Cyprus, the ferry is popular with customers from Syria, where about 150 people from there boarded the Akgünler on its last journey of the season. Greek Cypriots are concerned that this tiny act might be the beginning of a gradual recognition of the north.

A series of adverts published in nationwide Lebanese papers a few weeks before the service was launched, said “North Cyprus: Closer than you think!” but next to the ads was a notice which included the emblem of the Cypriot Embassy, saying “Direct visits to northern occupied Cyprus are illegal,” and “Penalties can be imposed.”
