According to Kibrisli newspaper (25.11.13) Turkey has started carrying out research for hydrocarbon resources in the open sea off Kyrenia. It says that a drilling platform named GSP Jupiter, belonging to a Romanian “Sonnat Offshore” company, arrived on Sunday in the north Cyprus coastal waters and is expected to start work within the next few days.

Citing “information from reliable sources”, the paper reports that GSP Jupiter has been sent to Eastern Mediterranean simultaneously with the RV Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa seismic vessel for carrying out explorations for hydrocarbon resources.

Well, the physical evidence suggests otherwise. Having seen this vessel on Saturday morning I tracked its passage using the www.marinetraffic.com website; currently [0500 GMT 26/11/2013] GSP Jupiter is at Azganlik – GSP Jupiter Location. Perhaps it will start drilling somewhere but at the moment it is not ‘off Kyrenia’ it is quite clearly in Turkish water.

As for the Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa seismic vessel being sent along with GSP Jupiter, a quick check on the internet reveals that the vessel is indeed off Cyprus, but not ‘off Kyrenia’.
