Popular Science News – Computer Trends put simply is that the Desktop PC is dead, and the laptop PC is mortally wounded. The Netbook and Ultraportable laptop are on the way out and the future is mobile.

To this end FaceBook is looking to buy WhatsApp, an application which will work a wide range of phones and as long as you have an internet plan allows you to freely message others who have the app(lication) loaded on their phone. To quote the website blurb:

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other! Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends.

In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages. [WhatsApp]

Not sure if this is the shape of the future but if FaceBook wants to buy WhatsApp then it’s worth playing with.
