Wind shift may clear European ash by the weekend

Many tourists are stranded in Cyprus or unable to start their holiday here. Today there has been a small window of opportunity which allowed some flights to leave but none to the UK. Fresh eruptions of the Icelandic volcano mean that this window will soon be closed. So far none of the London airports have reports of regular flights taking place.

The potential good new however is that a shift in the wind direction, expected in the next few day, could clear the European airspace and even if the volcanic activity increases again,  the ash would be driven into the Atlantic. The downside of this is that the US and Canada, which so far have avoided the ash, would then become affected.
