Daily Images – Aleppo Citadel is thought to be one of the oldest and largest castles in the world. The Citadel hill has been used since at least the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. The majority of the structure standing today is thought to originate from the Kurdish Muslim Ayyubid period. Members of his dynasty included the famous Sultan Saladin who occupied most of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, Egypt, Syria, northern Mesopotamia, Hejaz, Yemen, and the North African coast up to the borders of modern-day Tunisia. In the 1190s the Crusaders reversed his fortunes by retaking most of the coast of Palestine.
