Opinion | Strong North Cyprus Needed For Cyprus Peace Talks

The UN Envoy to Cyprus, Alex Downer, is on record as saying that it would be a “major mistake” for the international community to take advantage of the south’s current weakness compared to the north in order to pressure them into a deal reunifying the island.

Wow, what a brilliant man! He has recognised that when two sides negotiate it is only fair that they do so on equal terms. Stupid man! Does he not realise that the embargo on the north has had the same affect over the last few decades? Does he not realise that the south’s administration has been using its membership of the EU to weaken the north? Does he not realise that the south’s ‘No!’ vote in 2004, stopping the north’s entry into the EU, does the same thing?

OK, let’s imagine he had not realised the implications of his careless, throw away, observation but now, sticking to fairness, decides he will wait until two equal sides come to the Cyprus Peace Talks. Is he going to work towards strengthening the north? Is he going to push for the lifting of the north’s embargo and fight for the recognition of the north?

Would you recommend that the north waits until the south is stronger before restarting the Cyprus Peace Talks?
