Former Turkish Cypriot leader in intensive care, health situation improves

“Former Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktaş is still in an intensive care unit at a hospital and life-threatening risks remain, but these risks are declining and his health situation is improving, doctors said on Wednesday.

“He reacts faster, he recognizes everyone around him, talks to his family and friends,” Amber Eker, a neurologist at the Near East University Hospital in Lefkoşa, said at a press conference. Denktaş was hospitalized on Tuesday evening with complaints stemming from high blood pressure. Doctors detected an occlusion in Denktaş’s brain and feared permanent paralysis affecting the left side of his body.”
