North Cyprus Elections | UBP leader Kucuk to Resign

According to Havadis newspaper (30.07.13) Irsen Kucuk, who was not elected on Sunday, met with the general secretary of the National Unity Party (UBP) Necdet Numan and told him that he is resigning from UBP’s leadership. There was talk of him refusing to resign but his lack of popularity with the electorate has made such a move impossible.

Because of the way that the Preident is elected in North Cyprus it is unlikely that former President Mehmet Ali Talat will be elected to the presidency again as the combined strength of the nationalist vote exceeds 50%. If the same pattern were repeated in the presidential elections to be held in less than two years’ time, a consensus candidate of the right may have the upper hand. However, with only 64% voting in Sunday’s elections it is uncertain what a more typical turnout would result in.
