Levant News | France Backs Palestine Statehood

Levant News | France Backs Palestine StatehoodLevant News – in an unsurprising move France has backed Palestine Statehood in the UN vote due later this week. It is expected that they will be joined by half the 27 EU member states. Also unsurprising is the fact that Israel and the US are against Palestine’s status being upgraded at the UN. Upgraded status would mean the opportunity to participate in debates in the General Assembly and to join UN agencies, as well as the International Criminal Court. Perhaps one of the reasons that there will be desperate moves behind the scenes to prevent this is because Israel has promised unilateral action if the Palestinians challenge its actions in the ICC.

So far the only reason the ICC has given for rejecting its ICC war crime bid against Israel has been that Palestine ‘is not a country.’ Marek Marczynski, head of Amnesty International’s International Justice campaign, said that “this dangerous decision opens the ICC to accusations of political bias and is inconsistent with the independence of the ICC. It also breaches the Rome Statute, which clearly states that such matters should be considered by the institution’s judges.”

Avaaz are currently aiming for 1 750 000 votes in their petition urging a yes vote for Palestine; they have 1 670 00 currently. More information can be found in this North Cyprus Free Press Article
