Cyprus News | Kalecik Oil Leak Kills Marine Life Within 15km

Afrika newspaper (23.07.13) reports that the environmental disaster in Kalecik is even worse than first thought and has affected an area of 15 km. Three experts from the Turkish Middle East Technical University, were invited by the Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture, Mehmet Harmanci, to prepare a report about the effect of the oil leak. On receiving the report, the Minister is quoted as saying that the results are “scary”and that all creatures living in the sand or in the rocks in a perimeter of 15 km have died.

Other reports, however, dispute these findings and say that while creatures within 1km have been killed this is not conclusively true for 15km, as samples have yet to be analysed.
