Two of the three tourist beaches at Polis Chrysochous’ main tourist attractions in the south have vanished under advancing seawater as a result of the recent earthquake off the Turkish coast. The sea has advanced 40 metres over the last 15 days. Tons of sand have shifted, altering the coastline’s geography.

Coastal engineers from the south’s public works department have been consulted about ways of repairing the damage and erosion to these beaches and to others which have been affected to a lesser extent. Mayor Angelos Georgiou Odysseos said that

“The beaches, both awarded the Blue Flag are now inaccessible to the public and tourists, and have effectively been destroyed, so we call on the state for restoration works to begin immediately.”

There is no report of beaches in the north being similarly affected although there is a possibility that the amount of flotsam and jetsam on them may have protected them.
