A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck 44 miles to the northwest of Limassol in the south. The earthquake was felt mainly in the Paphos area but also people in Lefkosa felt the tremors too. The centre of the earthquake was a few miles west of Kissonerga village in Paphos. A second tremor, measuring 4.2, followed as can be seen on the map below.
Even though Cyprus lies in an earthquake zone large tremors are infrequent. This current earthquake is a little weaker than the highest recorded in recent years which was a 6.3 earthquake in 1996 which although it caused some damage, resulted in no casualties.
“The chair I was sitting on started moving and my sister came running down the stairs to tell me the wardrobes and doors were rattling,” said Sarah Ktisti, a journalist living in the region.
One member of British UK forces on the island reported that nothing was felt on the RAF base at Akrotiri.
