2 meals and 2 drinks for 50TL at Guido’s Italian Bistro, Alsancak

I haven’t felt much like reporting on any “2 meals and 2 drinks for 50tl” for a while, because of the cold weather. Having read many different reports about Guido’s, I thought I would drag myself away from the fire and along with two friends go and pay a visit. Guido’s is on the main Lapta to Girne road in Alsancak.

The restaurant was very warm and cosy, unlike some other hostelries we have visited in the winter. Liz made us very welcome and informed us of the Meal of the Day; with a choice of two starters, two mains courses and two deserts. Two courses are 20TL and three courses 25TL. Of course there is also a main menu with a huge variety to choose from.

On the table we had dipping oil and a basket of very fresh bread. Our orders were taken and our drinks arrived almost immediately . Beer is 4TL and a glass of Italian wine 7TL.

The starters arrived, two of us having King Prawns in a white wine and garlic sauce. I love garlic and there was plenty in the sauce. We were offered and had more bread to ‘mop up’ the sauce. We didn’t want to leave any of it. The third of our party had carrot and coriander soup which she said was also very good.

For the main course I had Chicken in a wine, cream and mushroom sauce which came with a separate dish of fresh vegetables. The chicken was succulent and extremely tasty. I am a lover of fresh vegetables but even I could not finish them all even though they were cooked to perfection. My other two friends chose Spaghetti a Ragu. Liz offered them freshly grated parmesan. Being an Italian restaurant there was no doubt this would be good and they said it was. The portions are generous and one of my friends was unable to finish hers, as delicious as it was. We were then asked if we would like a short break. We did and I was hoping that I would be able to manage either the Deep Apple Pie with Ice cream or Pannacotta with a raspberry coulis. As we were all full, in the end we declined and instead went to sit on the easy chairs and had several coffees and a brandy.

The service was extremely attentive and we were made to feel ‘at home’.

For the quality and quantity of the meal, I highly recommend this as one of the better “2 meals and 2 drinks for 50tl”. The Menu of the Day changes regularly but I am sure any day it will be equally as good. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Guido’s also have a delicatessen counter and a take away service.
