President Christofias is reported to have made Turkey an offer in respect to its plans to join the EU. In discussions with Turkey’s chief EU negotiator, Egemen Bağış, Christofias offered a deal to facilitate the continuation of Turkey’s accession talks. The Southern president demanded that Ankara release control of the ghost-town Maraş (en. Varosha) to the South Cypriot government. In exchange he offered to stop blocking some of Turkey’s accession chapters in their attempt to join the EU. Additionally he made the offer that the only Northern Cypriot harbour, Famagusta, could be opened to world trade under the auspices of the UN. This offer is reported by several southern Cypriot newspapers as having been made in a radio interview. A spokesman for the RoC President’s office has subsequently denied the reports, saying that they are unrealistic and simply fabricated and furthermore in a written statement has said that “as you know Dr Derviş Eroğlu is Mr Dimitris Christofias’s negotiating partner in all issues regarding North Cyprus in the current extensive talks searching for a solution between both leaders.”
