Girne Man Knifed to Death on Doorstep – a disabled retired jeweller, Mehmet Dagasanli, who’d had his carer arrested for theft the previous week, was stabbed to death when he answered a knock on his door in Girne. His carer has been arrested.
Father Gunned Down in Street – a ‘honour killing’ feud ended with a father being shot trying to protect his son, who was alleged to have had an affair with a member of the family involved in the shooting. It is rumoured that the gunman had been encouraged to settle the dispute in such a way by an 80 year grandfather who’d come all the way from Gaziantep in eastern Turkey to recommend murder as a solution to the marital problem.
Postcodes to Cut Delivery Times – it is not clear how, but it seems that a new postcode system will half the time it takes to not deliver your letters. It seems that all you have to do is add the postcode to the bottom of your normal Mersin 10 address. Editor: for fun I’ll post a letter in Girne and see how long it takes to be delivered to my letter box. Watch this space.

‘Killer Will Strike Again if Released’ – the killer of Ann and Reece Mahoney, jailed in December 2005, is due for parole in a few months because he was sentenced before tougher guidelines on murder were introduced. The law at the time laid down life sentences of 20 years, reduced to 8 years for good behaviour. Life sentences are now 40 years.
Paphos properties Belonging to Turkish Cypriots to be given to ‘young couples’ – according to Fileleftheros newspaper. Editor: this seems to contradict the south’s policy to only give such properties to refugees who’d abandoned properties in the north.
