Turkey EU Membership Moves Forwards Despite Cyprus Objection

Turkey EU Membership Moves Forwards Despite Cyprus ObjectionTurkey and the EU appear to have almost reached an agreement over the refugee crisis with EU leaders about to accept Turkey’s offer to take back all the refugees who entered Europe from Turkey. The EU also appears to have agreed in principle to all of Turkey’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s demands. Turkey will be given double the €3 billion they were originally offered, visa free travel for Turks would be brought forward to June and EU membership talks would be accelerated, including opening chapters that South Cyprus had been objecting to.

The deal is expected to be delivered to the European summit scheduled to be held on March 17 and will include a date for the opening of five more chapters in the accession talks, which had been blocked by Cyprus. This will of course infuriate the south but then what can they do?

Visa free travel for Turks at a time when there is about to be a EU exit referendum will also have an impact on that vote but even if there is a vote to leave the EU it will be too late to stop Turks entering the UK without a visa. There is also doubt as to whether UK can favourably trade with the EU without allowing visa free travel for EU member states as well as Turks. What a mess!

You left out that for every one refugee returned to Turkey another will be allowed to enter Europe.
    What a …mess !

it is waging war on an ethnic minority, its riot police just stormed the offices of a major newspaper, its secret service faces allegations of arming Isis, its military shot down a Russian bomber – and yet Turkey wants to join the European Union. The country’s swift descent into despotism poses yet another existential problem for the west.

The sight of Europe’s leaders kowtowing to Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in the hope he would switch off the flood of refugees to Greece, was sickening. After the Turkish courts authorised police to seize the Zaman newspaper, tear-gassing its employees and sacking the editors, the new bosses immediately placed Erdoğan’s smiling picture on the front page. He has a lot to smile about.

Yes a complete mess. Whoever thought that Turkey belongs in the EU has rocks in their head.

So the EU in their desperation are sleep walking into a situation that will make the current situation look like a crisis.

God help Europe. Turkey is blackmailing them into their worst nightmare and they are going along willingly.

Europe is gone mad even considering Turkey as a prospective member of the EU.

“To educated Muslims, honor killing has nothing to do with Islam and Turkey is the only “role model” Islamic country, because in all other Muslim countries, honor killing occurs. Unfortunately, after the Islamists came to power in 2002 and opened the gates of gradual Islamization of Turkey, after 8 decades of strict secular rule, Turkey has risen to be the world’s “number one honor killing country”, with a killing rate 5 times higher than that of Pakistan, known to be notorious for honor killing.”

I see that no one has yet mentioned the four hundred million (or more) people that have already started to move north from Africa. Barbed wire is going up everywhere but does Europe truthfully think they will be able to close all their borders? The World is changing and there is nothing we can do about that.
