Tuesday’s hearing in the trial of Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin was marred by the presence of an estimated 100 of the Turkish group known as the Grey Wolves. Their presence was allegedly threatening and disruptive, necessitating a large police presence outside Famagusta court.

According to Detay newspaper (27.05.15) the Grey Wolves were protesting against the Koray Basdogrultmaci and his wife Senem Sunel, who were fined for flying the south’s flag outside their home and shop in Famagusta.

According to the newspaper, the protesters were holding the flags of Turkey and the TRNC and were shouting slogans against the couple such as: “Cyprus is Turkish and will remain Turkish”, “Peace under equal conditions”, “How happy is the one who says I am Turkish” and other.

On that occasion the police arrested only one person despite the tense atmosphere.

The continuation of the trial this yesterday however was reportedly a much quieter affair and the absence of the Grey Wolves noticeable. The reason is thought to be that the TRNC police acted with decisiveness and detained 14 of the Grey Wolves members. It is also alleged that the Minister of the Interior ordered the police to arrest any of the Grey Wolves who turned up to demonstrate today who were not holders of TRNC passports. It is thought that this is reason the Grey Wolves did not arrive outside the court today.

Allegedly, this afternoon, two witnesses for the prosecution were in the witness box and were discredited in cross examination by the defence’s legal representative.

The case was adjourned until the 4th June 2015.

Koray and Cinel need all the support we can give them. Your presence on the 4th June at Famagusta court will give them the ‘lift’ they deserve.

For those of you who are unaware of this case, you can read about the circumstances that led to the odd decision to prosecute.¹

If you care, be there.
