Stop the Blackmail in North Cyprus Facebook Group

Just over two weeks ago, John Good started the Stop the Blackmail in North Cyprus Facebook Group. Other initiatives had been tried to form a cohesive group to tell the TRNC Government that enough is enough but these have all failed, primarily through lack of support.

There is genuine fear felt by a vast number of victims of the Property scams being perpetrated here in the TRNC and a real feeling that if the victims dare to speak out, reprisals will follow. Perhaps this could be construed as paranoia but the perception of these threats is very real.

In just under two weeks the membership of the Stop the Blackmail in North Cyprus Facebook Group, after a slow start, has risen to 521 members. The really encouraging trend is that it is a mixture of foreigners and Turkish Cypriots. At last victims are beginning to make their presence and their impatience with a Government who appears not to care, felt.

The Property problems include the complete loss of property legally purchased but then mortgaged by the vendor with unscrupulous Banks and money lenders, Courts putting Injunctions and Court Memorandums on properties to cover the amount of the debt of the former owner, Building problems such as non-build, part-build, bad build, no electricity, no water, overpriced utilities because builders failed to honour the Contract and complete the Electric or Water projects. Every time we think we have a handle on the diversity of the problem, a new one crops up. The behaviour of some of the perpetrators of these ills has been outrageous.

At last we have joined together to show our dissent at being treated this way. We are saying to the Government, do something; you cannot continue to turn a blind eye while such victimisation continues and while ordinary men and women are having their Human Rights walked all over. We ask the government to do what you have been elected to do.

Social networks such as Facebook groups have achieved what was thought impossible in the past. This group does not intend to be the exception. The internet has made the world into a big village and word is easily spread. In the TRNC the newspapers are not doing what they should, spreading the news, for fear of legal action by Banks. This is an indictment of the Media, the Bank and the Government.

We give you notice. The Stop the Blackmail in North Cyprus Facebook Group is growing at a pace that has surprised even us, the members. We intend to let the world know of the terrible injustice being suffered here by property buyers and owners who followed every legal guideline and yet were let down by those charged to protect us; the legal system, the Judiciary and the Government.

We have a petition running alongside this group. We want change, we want Justice and we want it now.
