Cyprus Problem – Greek Cypriots Rejects UN Joint Statement

Kibris newspaper (21.10.13), reports that the TRNC Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ozdil Nami, says that the content of the joint statement proposed by the United Nations was accepted by the Turkish Cypriot side, but rejected by the Greek Cypriot side. He said that both sides are working with UN officials on the content of the joint statement in order to hold the first meeting of the leaders, hopefully on the 4th of November.

It appears, according to Nami, that the Greek Cypriot side wants the content of the joint statement to include the issues of “Single Sovereignty” and “Single Citizenship” whilst the Turkish Cypriot side want to debate the issues of “Internal citizenship” and “Residual powers.” He also commented that a comprehensive agreement will comply with EU standards and that there is an EU chapter included in the negotiations, which they have already agreed on it.
