Popular Science News | Sitting Down is Bad for You!

Popular Science News – perhaps saying that sitting down is bad for you is a slight exaggeration but compared with other health warnings it is not. You hear that eating red meat or butter is bad for you and this shortens you life expectancy, well so does sitting down. Research shows that sitting down for more than 3 hours a day can cut up to two years off your life. Ridiculous as it sounds, this is almost as bad as smoking.

“Sitting is a risk factor, not a disease,” says Peter Katzmarzyk, PhD. He’s an associate executive director for population science at Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University System in Baton Rouge, La. “Some companies are replacing standard desks and chairs with treadmill desks or standing desks.”

I can see it now, in about 10 years time when this life style change of standing up all day becomes widespread, a research project will find that standing up for more than 3 hours a day is bad for you and that you should lie down most of the day and they’ll also suggest that work places should have beds!
