Popular Science News | Rubbish Fuel

Popular Science News – there is nothing new about bacteria being used to turn household waste into methane gas which can then be used to heat a boiler, say. I even did some research on this in the 1970s in Chester, UK. This has now been taken further and DNA manipulated bacteria have now been created which turn rubbish into a liquid fuel just just like the car in the Back To The Future movie.

A soil bacterium called Ralstonia eutropha creates isobutanol when it is stressed. Isobutanol can either be used directly as a fuel or mixed with other fuels. The only problem I have is that it looks as if the poor bacteria spends its whole life being stressed. I wonder if a pressure group will start a petition to ban this?
