Popular Science News | ‘Polypill’ Could Save 200,000 Lives

Popular Science News –  a “polypill” with the potential to save 200,000 lives in the UK could be available in less than two years. The four-medicine pill dramatically reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. Trials using the pill on healthy subjects, 50 years and over, reduced their blood pressure and cholesterol levels to that of an average 20-year-old. If everyone in the UK 50 years of age or older took the pill, the findings suggest 200,000 deaths would be prevented. Plus up to half a million illnesses resulting in non-fatal but life-changing disablement could be avoided.

Project leader Dr David Wald, from Queen Mary, University of London does not expect this pill to be available on the NHS until the end of 2013.
