Popular Science News | Making You Forget

Popular Science News | it started with researchers making mice forget that if they entered a particular chamber in an experimental cage they would receive a mild electric shock. This is brought about by deactivating the ‘memory gene.’ This process, it is believed, will also work for humans.

Now, of course, the idea is to use this procedure for the benefit of mankind. People who have experienced traumatic events could have them erased so that the psychological damage is prevented. Unfortunately it doesn’t take much imagination to see how this procedure could be used for less than honourable ends. For example, a banker in north Cyprus could have have his memory erased so that he knows nothing about existing contracts or houses on mortgaged land when he stands up in court and is questioned about such events.
