Popular Science News | Mail Order Ultrasound Machine

Popular Science News – a device which you plug into your PC and it acts as an ultrasound has been developed by a scientist at Newcastle University in the UK. It will cost around £35, a fraction of the cost of the machines used in hospitals. Obviously, this advance will be welcomed by Hospital Trust budget controllers but unfortunately there is a major downside to its use.

In India, for example, knowing the gender of an unborn child could lead to a massive surge in the abortion of female foetuses and further weaken the male to female ratios in countries following similar practices. Even though portable ultrasound machines use is heavily regulated under sex selection laws, enforcement is lax. If the machine, which is yet to be released, is pocket size then the law would be impossible to enforce.
