Popular Science News – the microbrewery Rogue Ales is starting production of a new beer, brewed with a yeast found in the beard of their master brewer.
This reminds me of the story of a friend who worked in the laboratory of the Blood Transfusion Service at Gore Street in Manchester. He was asked if he would be willing to transfer to a clean conditions laboratory where blood plasma was extracted and centrifuged in order to produce a material used to treat haemophiliacs. It seemed that they were having to remove the current technician from his new post because the agar plates used to check the lab was clean were consistently showing that he was bringing yeast into the room. It turned out this was because he lived at his parents’ home – a pub!
