Teen pulled from quake rubble in Turkey

Rescuers, working under floodlights, pulled a 13-year-old boy alive from the rubble of a collapsed apartment building early Friday, over 100 hours after a massive earthquake levelled many buildings in eastern Turkey, killing at least 550 people.

On the 29th October 1923 the Turkish Constitution was amended and Turkey became a Republic. Tomorrow is the 88th Anniversary and normally there would be celebrations in both Turkey and Northern Cyprus. Because of the terrible tragedy in Van, and the ongoing suffering, the Embassy in Lefkosa have cancelled the planned reception that was take place Ambassador’s Residence in Lefkosa tomorrow.

I know because, unlikely as it may seem, I did receive an invitation and had fully intended to attend. I received news of the cancellation and the reasons last night.

I know I speak for all the readers, the editor and myself when I send our sincere condolences to Turkey, the victims and those left behind in such appalling conditions.
