‘Cyprus Tarantula’

During a bit of “spring” cleaning in preparation for the relatively dust free winter I disturbed some of the spiders that inhabit our villa. I’m not particularly scared of spiders but one of them looked remarkably like a Tarantula. A little bit of research confirmed this but my worries soon faded when I discovered that the local species was not one of the deadly poison ones you hear about.

Apparently the ‘Cyprus Tarantula’ or wolf spider can be aggressive but would rather run and hide than attack. This species is very fast and difficult to catch unlike most other Cyprus spiders and is known for its ability to jump and escape. It has a mild poison but its sting is no worse than a bee’s. A more common form of defence is for them to eject a cloud of irritant hairs from their abdomen.
