My researcher has found this. Ten years ago property scams were rife already, probably ten years before that too. Muhtar’s issuing death certificates for phony deaths so that the ‘deceased’s property could be sold. Gives a whole new meaning to the famous saying by Mark Twain “reports of my death are greatly exaggerated”. Whilst not being a scaremonger I would suggest to honest Turkish Cypriots that they check the provenance of the land they own here, especially those living abroad. A search at the Tapu costs very little, the peace of mind it gives is priceless.

If having a mortgage taken out on land sold to them, can happen to over 1400 victims today, after the sale, think how easy is would be to sell the property of absentee landowners who believe their land is safe in north Cyprus. By the time most find out, it will take oodles of money to fight for the land to be returned to them and, time…time is an immeasurable in the north Cyprus legal system. Remember, those who bought such land would have done so in good faith and subject to a fraud too. In Cyprus, you need eyes in the back of your head, precognition and lots and lots of money. Sadly, unless you get good honest help, engage an honest, unbiased, legal representative and take as many precautions as possible before you buy, the advice still has to be – do not buy in Cyprus.
